So, you’re thinking of applying for a job in retail in preparation for the New Year. What better time to prepare for future employment then right about now? Some employers are more likely to postpone advertising their current job vacancies until the New Year in order to provide their candidates with a fresh start. Round about now, you can consider updating your CV, but also consider which retail sector may suit your skills the best. That way, you’ll be fully prepared for your new retail job just in time for January 2012.
Freshen up your CV
CV’s are, essentially, your tool to employment. Therefore it’s crucial that you update up your CV whenever your employment details change or if your role and responsibilities change in any way. If your future employer sees an out of date CV, they’ll have no way of understanding what your previous employment consisted of and will therefore believe you’re not committed to the employment process. If you are yet to write a CV then you can read through our CV advice page.
Here are our quick tips on how to get your CV looking perfect for the New Year:
- Tailor your CV to suit the role you’re going to be applying for. Note down your retail experience or aspirations and how it can benefit the retail sector you’re interested in. If you’re not sure which retail job will suit you best then read our blog article on choosing a job in retail.
- Begin brainstorming all the skills and experience you’ve learnt from your previous role, whether it was a job in retail or not. If it helps, write all your notes down on a piece of paper and work through the skills that an employer may find interesting and eye-catching.
- Get rid of any old information that the employer may not be interested in. Do you have any achievements that completely overrule previous ones? Don’t forget to change your contact details if they’ve changed too!
- Replace vague phrases with detailed ones. For example, instead of saying “Can work in a team as well as independently” you could say, “have experience in working with a team of 40 in a range of environments but can also use my own initiative to work independently.” Remember to engage the employer; you need to stand out from the crowd.
- If your CV is visually lacking and hard on the eyes, take this opportunity to revamp it a little. Stick to using plain and simple fonts, but try out a new layout and way of displaying each section to enable easier reading for the employer.
- Double check for any spelling or grammar mistakes.
